OIC Permanent Observer Mission to the UN organizes a panel on the role of the faith-based organizations and interfaith initiatives in reconciliation and peacemaking
The panel titled "The Role of the Faith-based Organizations and Interfaith Initiatives in Reconciliation and Peacemaking", and moderated by Ambassador Ufuk Gokcen, OIC's Permanent Observer to the UN, featured such distinguished speakers as Turkey's Permanent Representative to the UN HE Ambassador Ertugrul Apakan, Deputy Permanent Representative of Finland Mr. Janne Taalas, Dr. Joyce Dubensky of the Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding, Prof. Marc Gopin of George Mason University, Dr. William Vendley of World Conference for Religions for Peace, Dr. Azhar Hussain of International Center for Religion and Diplomacy, and Rabbi Arthur Schneier of the Appeal of Conscience Foundation. read more

International Conference on the Change in Muslim Societies and the Role of Women
The International Conference on the Change in Muslim Societies and the Role of Women is to be held on 22-24 December 2011 in Istanbul, Turkey with the participation of the Ministers, Parliamentarians, academicians and representatives of civil society from the OIC and non-OIC member states. The discussion of the issues related to women’s role in the process of democratization and new constitutional preparations, the relationship among democracy, gender equality and Islam, the promotion of civil society and regional cooperation will facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience among Muslim communities, and will further strengthen the cooperation among the OIC member states. read more

OIC Ambassador to the UN meets with Rabbi Arthur Schneier
OIC Permanent Observer to the UN Ambassador Gokcen paid a visit to
the Park East Synagogue and Rabbi Arthur Schneier Park East Day School
on 19 December 2011 and discussed with Rabbi Arthur Schneier issues
related to the Alliance of Civilizations and promotion of religious
freedom. Rabbi Scheier expressed his pleasure over and support to the
adoption by the UN General Assembly the same day of Resolution 66/167,
titled "Combating intolerance, negative stereotyping and
stigmatization of, and discrimination, incitement to violence and
violence against, persons based on religion or belief". read more

OIC proudly supports the Religions for Peace initiative
Marrakech, Morocco -- Senior religious leaders from across the Middle East and North Africa rejected violence and called for deepened multi-religious collaboration as the region undergoes historic transformations. They committed to stand in solidarity with all vulnerable communities, to advocate for full religious freedoms across the region and to call on all religious believers to become a united force to help ensure that governments honor the full rights, protect and serve all of their citizens without exception. read more

OIC Appeals to the Member States for Aid to Somalia
Due to the critical situation and the need to mobilize all Member States and institutions to come to the aid of the famine-affected Somali people, which has affected three million people with over a million, most of them women and old people, displaced in Mogadishu, on 11 July 2011, the OIC launched, through its Humanitarian Coordination Office in Mogadishu, an emergency relief project as first step to benefit a large number of displaced people, and started with distribution of emergency food relief and non-food items to 300 families for a month. read more

High-Level Symposium on Combating Intolerance, Discrimination, and Violence Based on Religion or Belief
The Secretary of State of the United States, the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, together with foreign ministers and officials from Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, Senegal, Sudan, Turkey, United Kingdom, the Vatican (Holy See), UN OHCHR, Arab League, African Union, met on July 15 in Istanbul to give a united impetus to the implementation of UN Human Rights Council Resolution 16/18 on “Combating intolerance, negative stereotyping and stigmatization of, and discrimination, incitement to violence, and violence against persons based on religion or belief.” read more

OIC Mission hosts a Non-Violent Peace Force workshop
OIC Ambassador to the UN Mr. Ufuk Gokcen welcomed the Nonviolent Peaceforce to the office of the mission in New York. Nonviolent Peaceforce is a nongovernmental organization which has trained many unarmed civilian peace protection teams in order to support to local population and deter violence in conflict zones. read more
